If you’re an electrician, you’re always looking for more customers.

The problem is that you’re busy helping home and business owners ensure their electrical systems are working correctly.

While you want to grow your company, your days revolve around your customers’ needs.

This is where SMS marketing becomes extremely valuable. When done right, text marketing is a simple, efficient, and cost-effective. You’ll generate more business each month from old and new customers that have opted in to hear from you.

If you haven’t yet made it part of your strategy, now is the time to start!

To help you get started, we put together these six text marketing tips specific to electricians.

1. Add a Click-to-Text Button to Your Google My Business (GMB) Listing

Imagine that you are home on a quiet weekend. Your washing machine won’t turn on. You need an electrician!

How do you find someone?

The chances are that you’ll pull out your phone and start searching online for electricians in your area.

If this is the approach you will take, you’re not alone.

88% of searches for local businesses on a mobile device either call or visit the business within 24 hours.

You can give people who find you while browsing the internet from their mobile phone every opportunity to reach you when you add a click-to-text button to your Google Business listing.

2. Generate Online Reviews

As a busy electrician, chances are you don’t have a ton of time to surf the internet. But we recommend that you keep an eye on your online reviews.

Whether you like it or not, customers will give online feedback about your business. While it may seem out of your control, how you respond to negative reviews, and how many good customer reviews you solicit is dependent on you.

The benefits of positive reviews extend far beyond sales. Reviews can also impact your Google rankings.

So, how do you generate more positive reviews? It’s simple actually–you ask people to leave you a review.

We are unashamedly biased about our preference for sending review requests via SMS. People ignore emails, turn off push notifications, and throw away paper forms, but they almost always read their texts.

💡 This article covers how to send review requests via SMS.

3. Run a Promotion

When we think of electricians the idea of running promotions or sales doesn’t always come to mind.

However, there are instances where you can still use promotions. Let’s say you grow a list of SMS subscribers–you can send out a promotion that offers $25 off any electrical repairs

Charleston Electric here! Have you put off replacing broken that socket? We’re offering $25 off all jobs booked this week. Just respond to this text, and we’ll follow up with you.

There are tons of people with minor jobs that they never get around to. Every so often, texting out strategic offers can help fill your calendar.

4. Keep Up With Technicians

Keeping your technicians updated can be a headache, and it’s easy to get your wires crossed.

They need to let you know when they arrive and leave a location. You probably also need to provide them with directions to the various properties. Sometimes electrical contractors provide technicians with expensive devices like GPSs or tablets.

Beyond the cost, it’s also time-consuming. So, why not take advantage of the quick, cheap, and universal nature of text messages?

You can send a text with an address to your technicians, who can tap on the message and pull up directions on Google maps. Texting unifies and simplifies your internal communication, helping your technicians navigate their days more efficiently.

5. Send Payment Reminders

For its 2018 Consumer Credit Card Report, NerdWallet surveyed 2,019 US adults and found that 35% simply forgot to make the payment when missing a payment.

Late payments currently cost small businesses more than $3 trillion per year. Plus, chasing debts is not a good way to spend your time.

We recommend sending a gentle payment reminder via SMS.

Hi Sarah, a friendly reminder that there is an amount of $150 outstanding on your account for the light fixture. It was due on Thursday, 6/7. Please call us to make a payment.

6. Avoid Cancellations and Reschedule With SMS

One of the unfortunate truths of running a business is that if you don’t do the work, you don’t get paid. There’s no punching a time clock and collecting a paycheck.

Clients must keep their appointments with you and avoid cancellation. A last-minute cancellation can wreak havoc on your entire schedule.

While some electricians try to charge a cancellation fee, you can prevent this from happening by sending an appointment reminder:

Hey John, quick reminder that we’ll be over around 3pm to fix your socket. Let us know if something comes up. Thanks! – Jim, Jimmy Electric
