So, if you’re here, you may be wondering how hyperlinks in texts work. Well, I have good news and bad news. 

The bad news is, you can’t technically put a hyperlink into a text message. 

The good news? You can still add a link to almost any text message. If you’re feeling a little confused about the difference between links and hyperlinks, you’re not alone.

I’ll explain the difference between the two, show you how easy texting links can be, and give you some inside information on how to use links to perfect future campaigns.

Why are text links powerful?

First things first, why would a business owner want to send a link in a text message? Well, links do a few very important things.

  • They give your contacts a clear next step to follow.  A text that simply says, “We’re having a sale!” may confuse your subscribers more than one that says, “Shop our sale at [LINK]!”
  • They make taking the next step convenient. Once your contacts know what to do, it’s important that you reduce the amount of time and effort they’ll have to devote to doing it. Your customers can open your link with a single click, making them much more likely to take action.
  • They allow you to track your results (more on that later). The best SMS marketing strategy is one that improves and evolves over time. Links give you an easy, measurable way to see how much of your audience is tuned in and interacting with your texts so you can level up future campaigns.
  • They encourage engagement beyond simply opening and reading the text. Texts get a 98% open rate, which is excellent. Add links to that open rate and you give your audience a reason to stay engaged with your brand for longer than the time it takes to read your text.

Understanding the distinctions between links, hyperlinks, and short links is fundamental in the world of digital communication. Each type of link serves a unique purpose:

  • Links: A link is a reference or connection between one document or webpage and another. They are used to connect web pages, provide additional information, or direct users to related resources.
  • Hyperlinks: A hyperlink is a specific type of link that is typically embedded in a document or webpage designed to redirect the user to another location. They are widely used for navigation within websites, citation of sources, and reference to external content.
  • Short Links: Short links are a condensed version of regular URLs, created to make long web addresses shorter and more user-friendly. They are typically generated using URL-shortening services.

Due to the nature of text messaging, it is often more efficient and effective to text a hyperlink because it is shorter, making it easier for the recipient to understand what the link is.

No matter how you format them, adding links to your texts gives you the chance to extend your messages beyond the character limits and deepen your customer connection.

How to send a link in a text message

The big question is, how do you send a link in a text? There’s just one easy step to follow. To include a link in any text message, just type or paste the full URL into your text.

Most messaging platforms automatically turn the URL into a link allowing contacts to click and access the linked page.

How to track link click-through rates for links in text messages

Once you text out a shortened URL, you can track your message in real time to see who has clicked on your link.

That’s crucial information that will help you refine future campaigns and troubleshoot low link clicks.

To find your click-through rate (CTR), click on “Analytics” from the left side menu. Then, scroll down to the bottom of the page and find your text campaign.

This page will give you all the necessary information, including how many messages were successfully sent, delivered, and opened. You’ll also be able to see how many people responded to your campaign or unsubscribed. 

To view your CTR, scroll all the way to the right until you see “Clicked” and “CTR.”

A look at the analytics for links in texts

Knowing your campaign’s CTR will help you measure its success based on how many people clicked.

That knowledge means you can refine your future campaigns by segmenting your list based on which contacts interacted with the last campaign. You can then send follow-up messages based on that behavior.

How to see SMS traffic in Google Analytics and other analytics platforms

Interested in gaining deeper insights into your SMS campaign performance? With Google Analytics, you can unlock a wealth of information about user behavior once they interact with the links in your text messages. Follow this step-by-step guide to see how you can use the SMS channel within Google Analytics 4 to enhance your campaign.

1. Create a tagged link

To create a tagged link for tracking SMS traffic, you need to use UTM parameters, which is extra data attached to your URL. The easiest way to do this is by using the Google Campaign Builder URL tool. Here’s how to set it up:

  • Website URL: Input the destination URL where you want the link to direct users.
  • Campaign source: Clearly identify the source of your traffic. For SMS campaigns, it's recommended to use either 'sms' or the platform you're using, such as 'ClickSend.'
  • Campaign medium: Specify the medium for this link, which, in this case, should be 'sms.'
  • Campaign name: For consistency and easy tracking, it's advisable to use the same campaign name you've designated in your Dashboard. Be sure to replace spaces between words with hyphens.

Once you've filled in these details, the Google Campaign URL Builder tool will generate a tagged link that you can insert in your campaign so Google Analytics can attribute link clicks to your SMS efforts.

2. Shorten your link

Shorten your tracking link to save on character count using the convenient Short Link feature within the Dashboard. Doing this allows you to send your tracking link without taking up too much content space. This step can be performed while crafting your message content in the SMS Campaign screen. Here’s how:

  • Begin by copying the URL you've generated with the Campaign URL Builder tool.
  • Next, navigate to the SMS Campaign screen within your Dashboard, where you compose your SMS message.
  • Paste the copied URL into the link shortener provided in the Dashboard.

3. Track your performance in Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

Discovering traffic from your SMS campaigns is a breeze with Google Analytics. To access this information, Navigate to the standard Traffic Acquisition report by clicking on 'Reports' in the left menu, then select 'Acquisition,' and finally 'Traffic Acquisition.'

In the latest Google Analytics 4 (GA4) version, SMS is now a designated 'Default Channel Group.’ To ensure your SMS traffic is accurately tracked, make sure to include 'sms' in your tracking link under either the source or medium category.

If you’re looking for more details, create a personalized SMS report by tailoring it to your specific needs and preferences. This way, you can dive deeper into the metrics that matter most to your SMS marketing campaigns, offering you a comprehensive view of their performance. Start with a blank exploration, then do the following:

  • Name Your Exploration: Start by giving your exploration a meaningful name to easily identify it in the future.
  • Add Dimensions: Click the '+' icon on the right of the 'Dimensions' section in the Variables column. Search for and select 'Session Default Channel Grouping,' 'Session Campaign,' and 'Country.' Save your selections.
  • Add Metrics: Click the '+' icon on the right of the 'Metrics' section in the Variables column. Search for the metrics you wish to track, such as 'Total Users,' 'Sessions,' 'Average Session Duration,' and 'Views per Session.' Choose your desired metrics and click 'Save.' Select the metrics that align with your SMS campaign goals.
  • Arrange Dimensions and Metrics: Drag and drop your chosen dimensions into the 'Rows' section for proper organization. Similarly, drag and drop your selected metrics into the 'Values' section.
  • Add a Filter: Create a filter by specifying that 'Session Default Channel Group' contains 'SMS.' This filter will narrow down your report to sessions originating from your SMS campaigns.

EcoWater Texas is a renowned residential water treatment company. As a Costco partner, they were constantly dealing with a large influx of customers, and needed to find a way to reduce the amount of missed consultation appointments.

According to Kristopher Yglesias of EcoWater, they trust SimpleTexting for sending appointment reminders because, “I think your platform is really stable. Todd says they decided SMS texting was the best solution for this problem because, “People prefer receiving updates by text message because it’s fast, they can go back and review, and they can also ask any questions and start a conversation.”

According to Todd, they have received an overwhelmingly positive response from their customers since implementing SimpleTexting’s services.   • Clear call to action (CTA): Accompany your link with a clear and compelling call to action. Inform recipients of the benefit they'll gain by clicking on the link, such as "Shop now," "Learn more," or "Claim your offer."
  • Mobile optimization: Ensure that the linked web page is mobile-friendly. Many users access links in text messages on their mobile devices, so the linked content should be easy to read and navigate on small screens.
  • Consent and transparency: Obtain proper consent from recipients before sending links, especially if they lead to promotional or commercial content. Be transparent about the purpose of the link—users should be confident that, when they click the link, it will take them to the advertised destination.
