Meet the recipients of this year’s SimpleTexting scholarships! SimpleTexting is proud to support motivated students for the sixth year in a row.
Congratulations to the 2020 SimpleTexting scholarship winners:
Danielle Fedrigo
The University of Rochester
Danielle is a first-year student at the University of Rochester majoring in English and American Sign Language (ASL) and minoring in math. She has had a lifelong passion for learning and helping others pursue their academic goals. Fueled by this passion, on completion of her undergraduate degree she plans to attend graduate school to study secondary education.
Eventually, Danielle hopes to return to her home state, Michigan, to teach English or ASL to high school students. When she is not doing classwork, Danielle enjoys working as a tutor, reading biographies, advocating for sustainability, and spending time with friends and family. She would like to thank SimpleTexting for their generosity and support, especially during a challenging year.
Oyinda Obigbesan
Calgary Christian School
Oyinda Obigbesan is currently a high school senior who is planning to study Biology in her undergraduate studies. She is passionate about science and how the applications of science can be used to improve the wellbeing and health of all people. As a first-generation Nigerian-Canadian, Oyinda’s family and culture have inspired her to seek higher education with excitement and diligence. In her spare time, she enjoys all physical activities – including hiking, running, and playing sports – as well as reading and gardening. Oyinda is very excited to see what the future holds and is thankful to SimpleTexting for this scholarship!
Students were asked to write an essay following the below prompt:
In a year with so much uncertainty, where physical, financial, and mental health have been put in jeopardy, reaching out to loved ones through a phone call, email, or text can have large and lasting positive impacts. Tell us how texting specifically has helped sustain and strengthen your relationships during the age of COVID-19. What text messages have you sent to friends, family, and loved ones during the pandemic that you believe had the most positive impact?
This year we received over 1,000 thought-provoking and heartfelt submissions from students in the U.S. and in Canada. Though it was difficult to choose only one winner, there were two submissions that stood out from the rest. Danielle and Oyinda will both receive $1,000 to put towards their college expenses for the essays they submitted.
