How to Make Posts Shoppable on Instagram

How to Make Posts Shoppable on Instagram

Find out how to make your e-commerce store's Instagram posts shoppable as well as how SMS can help you drive more mobile sales.

Did you know that every month, 130 million people tap on an Instagram shopping post to learn more about a product?

If you haven’t made your Instagram account “shoppable”, your e-commerce business could be losing out on thousands of dollars in sales each month.

Thankfully, this is no cause for alarm. We’ll show you how to turn your social media platform into an interactive shopping experience without the need for any expensive software. You’ll just need the mobile device you already have (most likely) by your side.

What Is a Shoppable Post?

A shoppable post is a photo that can be clicked and opened up within Instagram to reveal a product page with price and item details along with a link to view it on your website. Like this:

These kinds of posts make it easier for your followers to directly shop the exact items they see featured on your social media page.

You can tag up to five products per photo and add them all to your store “catalog” to simulate the online shopping experience right from the app.

Once an item is in your catalog, you can post a link to shop it on your stories as well:

When clicked, shoppers will be redirected from Instagram to the mobile version of your website where they can purchase the item directly.

In the last few years, the rise of mobile shopping has caused Instagram shopping experiences like this to soar in popularity.

In fact, 79% of smartphone users have made a purchase online using their mobile devices in the last 6 months!

How To Make Posts Shoppable on Instagram

The traditional way to make posts shoppable on Instagram is simple. First, you’ll want to make sure your Instagram profile is set to business rather than personal. It likely already is, but if not you can change it right from your Settings > Account > Switch to Business Account.

You’ll also need a product catalog associated with your business Facebook account (here’s a step by step guide on how to set that up).

Once you’ve got those two steps taken care of, all you need to do is:

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Click the Get Started alert at the top of your profile
  3. If you don’t see the alert in the image above, click on Options or the gear wheel
  4. Select Products
  5. Then Continue
  6. Click on a product catalog to connect to your business profile
  7. Click Done
  8. Go to the product photo you’ve posted and want to make shoppable
  9. Tap Tag Products from the edit screen
  10. Click the products in the photo you want to tag
  11. Type the names of the products you want to tag, then select them as they appear in the search box
  12. Click Done
  13. Click Share

Your posts are now shoppable!

How To Enable Text-to-Shop on Instagram

As we mentioned before, 130 million taps on these shopping tags occur each month on Instagram. However, 130 million sales don’t always result from these lookie-loos.

So, how do you capture the attention of your customers while they’re virtually window shopping? That’s where texting comes in.

With SimpleTexting you have access to unlimited keywords. Keywords are short words or phrases that can be texted in to your number or short code in order to sign-up for future marketing messages.

In this case, you can associate a keyword with each of the product categories listed on your Instagram shop. For example, in the boutique examples above, you could choose to create a keyword for clothing categories such as dress, skirts, or shirts. Or, you could make one for each brand your store carries.

You can advertise the keyword in your item description alongside the other product details encouraging customers to text in to receive a discount for shopping with you.
